저희는 미국장로교회 (PCUSA)에서 파송받아 이집트에서 선교동역자 (Mission Co-Worker)로 섬기며

신학교에서 성서신학 (biblical studies)와 기독교교육 (Christian education)을 가르치고 있습니다.

저희가 일하는 카이로장로교신학교(Evangelical Theological Seminary in Cairo)는

이집트장로교단 (Evangelical Church of Egypt – Synod of the Nile)와 더불어 미국장로교회가 설립하고

지난150여년 지속적으로 지원해 온 교단과 신학교입니다. 중동지역에서 가장 큰 개신교 교단이며 신학교이기도 합니다.

현재 본교단에는 약 400개의 교회가 소속되어 있으며 신학교에도 약 400명의 학생이 공부하고 있습니다.

 

이집트와 중동지역 기독교의 역사는 사도시대로까지 거슬러 올라갑니다.

하지만 주후 7세기 아랍 점령과 이슬람의 도래 후 지켜온 신앙의 역사는 지난하기 그지 없습니다.

특별히 최근들어 절기마다 연속되는 폭탄과 총격 테러 중에도 신앙을 지키는 이집트 크리스천들의 모습은 참으로 존경스럽기까지합니다.

그리고 이런 환경 내에 이집트장로교단과 카이로장로교신학교가 이런 규모와 내용으로 존재한다는 것은 기적같은 일입니다.

저희가 섬기는 카이로의 신학교는 이런 믿음의 역사에 서 있으며 전략적 중요성과 미래에 대한 비전만큼은

세계 어느 신학교와 비교해도 떨어지지 않습니다.

 

미국장로교회가 아랍권 가운데 이집트에 집중하는 이유는 중동과 북아프리카 선교를 위한 전략적 요충지이기 때문입니다.

본신학교는 전통적으로 이집트 학생들 뿐 아니라 인근 나라들로부터 학생들을 받아 교육시켜왔고 또 졸업생들 가운데 일부는 각 나라에 나가

교회의 리더로 활동하기도 합니다. 중동지역에 다른 신학교가 서넛 더 있기는 하지만 개신교 신학교 중 본신학교만한 규모와 교수진

그리고 깊이 있는 교육을 제공하는 곳은 없을만틈 중요한 위치입니다. 

본신학교에는 현재 약 17명의 풀타임 교수진이 있으며 MDiv, MA in Theology를 비롯한 총 10개의 프로그램이 있습니다.

안수받는 과정에 있는 학생들은 거의 모두 기숙사에 머물며 4년간 공동체내에서 학문적 훈련을 받습니다.

특기할 내용은 본신학교에는 안수받지 않으나 여전히 신학교육에 열의를 가진 학생들이 더 많다는 것과,

그들 중 다수는 이집트에서 전문직을 가진 이들이라는 사실입니다. 이슬람이 90%를 점하는 나라에서 다양한 배경의 크리스천들이

신학교육을 받으러 오며 어떤 이들은 내실 있는 신학교육을 위해 타교단과 심지어 콥틱정교회에서도 찾아오고 있습니다.

특별히2017년부터는 온라인 신학석사과정을 신설하여 지리적인, 정치적인 이유로 오지 못하는 이들을 위한 교육 플랫폼을 마련하였습니다.

앞으로 이라크나 시리아, 또는 수단과 리비야와 같이 전통적으로 신학교육의 수요가 있으나 이를 해소할 길이 없는 곳들을 섬길 것으로 예상합니다.

이 사실은 역사적으로 중동지역 기독교의 센터인 카이로에 있는 본신학교가 교단 신학교육을 넘어 이 나라와 중동 및 북아프리카에

어떤 비전을 갖고 있는지 보여주는 예라 하겠습니다.

이 신학교에서 저희가 감당하는 사역은 각각 성서와 기독교교육을 가르치는 것이지만, 실제론 더 많은 일로 학생들과 만나고

그들의 목회와 신학적 정체성을 형성하는 일을 돕는 것입니다. 감사한 것은 한국 교회의 정서와 경험이 이집트 교회와 잘 맞으며,

한국교회의 성공과 좌절이 이집트 교회에 좋은 모범이 된다는 사실입니다. 카이로에 있는 전통 있는 신학교에 첫 한국인 교수진으로 와

신학과 목회의 경험을 나누며 특히 미국장로교회의 150년 선교역사를 연이어 일한다는 데 큰 감사의 이유를 발견합니다.

About Noah Park’s and Esther Shin’s ministry

Noah Park and Esther Shin, a married couple, serve as professors at the Evangelical Theological Seminary in Cairo (ETCS). Noah teaches New Testament, and Esther teaches Christian education. ETCS, a ministry of the Evangelical Presbyterian Church in Egypt, is one of a handful of seminaries in the Middle East that trains future Protestant pastors. Presbyterian mission personnel founded the school in 1863. The seminary located in Cairo has two academic centers, one in Minya/Upper Egypt, and one in Alexandria. Though most of its 400 students are from Egypt, some come from elsewhere in the Arab world, including Syria and Sudan, to prepare for service in churches in their home countries. ETSC also recently launched a distance learning program for Arabic speakers anywhere around the world.

Country Context

While most Egyptians (90%) are Muslims, Egypt’s Christian tradition reaches back to the apostolic era. The Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) celebrates more than a century and a half of ministry in Egypt and strong partnerships with the country’s Protestant churches. Presbyterian World Mission also works in a variety of ways with the direct inheritor of Egypt’s oldest Christian tradition, the Coptic Orthodox Church. The Evangelical Presbyterian Church in Egypt encompasses eight presbyteries, several programmatic councils, and approximately 400 congregations throughout the cities and villages of Egypt.

The government of Egypt that came to power after the Muslim Brotherhood fell in 2013 has afforded new opportunities to the Evangelical Presbyterian Church. It has given land to the church for the building of new church facilities and significantly eased the process to obtain building permits. This is unprecedented in the history of Egypt since the Arab Islamic conquest in the 7th century. Despite on-going issues as a minority group in society, church leaders see this as a God-given opportunity to start new churches where none exist.

About Noah Park and Esther Shin

Noah and Esther appreciate the strategic importance of the ETCS and the opportunity to equip ministers for service across the Middle East and North Africa. “The Evangelical Theological Seminary in Cairo is the hub of Christianity in the Arab world for the training of church leaders,” Noah says. “I believe God will use our graduates for rebuilding the church in Middle Eastern countries. It is our joy and privilege to live among Egyptian sisters and brothers and share what we have graciously received in our lives.”

Esther and Noah were involved in congregational ministry for several years before beginning service in Egypt in 2016. Both are ordained Presbyterian ministers. Noah served as senior pastor and Esther as Christian education pastor in Southern California. They found their call to service and theological education in the context of their vocational pilgrimages. “We were both called to ministry when we were very young,” Esther says. “Through our journey in education and ministry and especially during our summer teaching in Nigeria, God has led us to be convinced of our calling to service.”

While their primary responsibilities are in the classroom, Noah and Esther say their ministry does not stop there. “Since theological education is not simply about information or knowledge, we try first to learn through our relationship with real people, hearing their stories and participating their communities,” Noah says.

Esther received a doctorate in Christian education from Union Presbyterian Seminary in Richmond, Virginia, a master’s in religion and psychology through a joint degree program of the Graduate Theological Union and San Francisco Theological Seminary, and a master’s degree in divinity from Presbyterian Theological Seminary in Seoul, Korea.

Noah earned a doctorate in Biblical Studies and a master’s in biblical languages from the Graduate Theological Union in Berkeley, California. He holds a master’s degree in divinity from San Francisco Theological Seminary.
